Combat Arms Fencing was established to bring the sport of fencing to wounded warriors participating in the rehabilitation program at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), also known as Balboa Hospital.
Combat Arms focuses on the service members at NMCSD, but the program is open to disabled athletes from the entire San Diego community. The goal is to create a wheelchair fencing program in San Diego which is accessible to athletes of all ages and ability levels.
Wheelchair fencing is a fast, demanding sport which develops reflexes, stamina, core strength, hand-eye coordination and a strong competitive spirit.
Fencing instruction is provided by Maestro Stuart Lee and club members of the LionHeart Fencing Academy in La Mesa, California. Training takes place at Balboa Hospital and at LionHeart.
Initial funding for Combat Arms Fencing was provided through a grant from the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation.
Anyone interested in supporting the activities of Combat Arms Fencing or any of the many other volunteer activities at Balboa Hospital should contact us at the email below or contact the Armed Services YMCA. Financial contributions can be made to Combat Arms Fencing through Operation Rebound of the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
